Giro Sport Design Making an Impact | Texas Cyclesport

28th Aug 2014

STARCK & GIRO
“The increasing power of man and machine create new needs and new ergonomics that I have decided to take on with Giro, the most innovative player in this industry,” said Philippe Starck, a preeminent industrial designer and artist.

Starck, a Harvard Excellence in Design award winner, launched a range of e-bikes for urban cyclists at this year’s Eurobike trade show. The bike brand, S+ARCKBIKE, was created in collaboration with European cycle manufacturer Moustache. Starck approached Giro early on to develop a helmet to complement the range of e-bikes. The result is the Giro by S+ARCKBIKE helmet concept, a design that combines aluminum, cork and sophisticated industrial design.

AWARDS IN FOOTWEAR
Only one brand won a Eurobike award for footwear in 2014. That brand was Giro, and we didn’t win one award, we won two! The first award was for our Empire SLX. Weighing 175 grams, with a stiff and efficient Easton EC90 SLX Carbon Fiber outsole and breathable EvoFiber SL upper, it’s no wonder that Eurobike gave us the award for “Best in Show.”

We are also proud to win a best in show award for the Rumble VR, a brand new and super versatile new laced shoe. The Rumble VR has a lot of features, including a Vibram rubber sole for confident grip off the bike; a molded, SPD-compatible shank, and a high quality synthetic mesh upper; best of all the price is right at $80 (US MSRP).
MIPS
This week was a pivotal moment in Giro’s 30-year history. We officially launched a line of MIPS-equipped helmets and announced our partnership with the Swedish company, MIPS AB. On the eve of the Eurobike trade show, Greg Shapleigh (Giro’s General Manager) and Johan Thiel (the CEO of MIPS) presented the line to about 40 key members of the international media. The crowd was captivated throughout the presentation and there was a lively dialogue following the event about the importance of this new technology.
