Smoother, Quieter and Faster than my old Ksyrium SLs

Posted by Unknown on 29th Oct 2014

I'm 185 lbs and ride a Ritchey Breakaway steel frame/carbon fork. For the past 4 years I've ridden Ksyrium SLs, which I really liked. Recently I had too much noise from creaking spokes, and I wore out a hub, so decided to upgrade. Much research. Wanted to stay under $800 for a wheelset, so I looked at Ksyrium Elites, Zipp 30s and the Shimano RS81-24s. Were the Shimano reviews (all positive) too good to be true? I decided to try them.

I've ridden several 30 mile loops on my favorite go-to ride. In general, using the exact same tires (Conti 4000s 25s), tubes, pressure (105 psi) and bike, I am averaging over 21 mph on a 60 minute section. That is a +1 mph gain over 3 years of data for same route on my Garmin. Also, the ride is MUCH smoother. I know every bump on this route. I keep being surprised at how well the RS81s cushion my ride. They are also much quieter wheels than the Mavics. Not looking back - great decision, and Texas Cyclesport had great customer service and quick delivery.
